Butler seeks quick turnaround in bout with Detroit

NCAA Basketball Betting Lines

02/05/2009 - Detroit, MI (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The 11th-ranked Butler Bulldogs will attempt to bounce back from their first Horizon League loss as they take on the Detroit Titans on the road this evening.

On Monday, Butler dropped a 75-66 decision to Wisconsin-Green Bay on the road, halting an 11-game win streak. Still, the Bulldogs are a stellar 19-2 overall, and their 10-1 league record is sensational. The only other loss suffered by the squad thus far came way back in mid-December by three points to Ohio State.

Detroit is in a much different position than Butler, as the team has managed only one HL victory against 10 losses. The Titans are 6-15 overall, but they have won two of their last three outings. On Saturday, they knocked off Youngstown State in overtime by a 68-64 final.

Butler recorded a hard-fought 54-50 decision over Detroit on January 10th, and the Bulldogs own a 38-27 series lead over the Titans.

Butler struggled at the offensive end in the loss to UW-Green Bay on Monday night. The Bulldogs turned the ball over 16 times and shot just 37.7 percent from the floor. Sure, they converted 18-of-20 free throws in the tilt, but Green Bay put forth a stellar 32-of-35 effort at the stripe. A 39-31 rebounding advantage didn't help matters much for the Bulldogs, who got 22 points from Gordon Hayward in the setback. Matt Howard scored 14 points, and Shelvin Mack finished with 10 points and eight assists. Hayward has taken over the team scoring lead, as he is now averaging 13.4 ppg, a slightly higher mark than that of Howard (13.3 ppg). As for Mack, he provides 12.7 ppg for Butler, which is generating 68.0 ppg while limiting opponents to 56.3 ppg on 37.5 percent shooting from the field.

Thomas Kennedy scored 24 points to lead Detroit to the overtime victory over Youngstown State on Saturday. Woody Payne pitched in with 16 points, eight rebounds and eight assists for the Titans, who got 11 points and nine boards from Chris Hayes off the bench. Detroit did not excel in any one area of the contest, but the team played well enough across the board to earn its first league win. Overall this season, Kennedy is scoring 12.6 ppg, and he will be counted on to be productive at the offensive end tonight. The Titans have struggled mightily to generate offense this season, as the team is averaging only 56.8 ppg on 41.2 percent shooting from the field. Defensively, Detroit is holding foes to 64.0 ppg.

Sportsbook betting odds favor Europe in Ryder Cup

September 19, – Despite holding a decided edge in the all-time series, with 24 wins, 2 ties and 10 losses, Team USA is the underdog again heading into the Ryder Cup in Kidare, Ireland this weekend, according to MySportsbook.com.  The Europeans have captured four of the past five editions, including their largest victory ever, an 18 ½ to 9 ½ thumping in Michigan in 2004. Current Ryder Cup betting odds favor the Europeans to continue their winning ways; they are a 4-5 bet to take the title, compared to 6-5 for the Americans.

Despite being knocked out in the first round of World Match play by Shaun Micheel, Tiger Woods is predicted to lead the US charge and be their highest point scorer for the week, with odds listed at 9-4 that he outpoints all other American players, including Jim Furyk, Phil Mickelson and Chris DiMarco to  name a  few.  Team USA has four relatively unknown players on the roster but all four are 2007 tournament winners and have posted some of season’s best performances, each earning over $1.5 million on the PGA TOUR.  They include Zach Johnson, Vaughan Taylor, JJ Henry and Brett Wetterich.

The experienced European squad includes the likes of Luke Donald, Sergio Garcia, Padraig Harrington, Jose Maria Olazabal and Darren Clarke, who’s emotions will be tested after the passing of his wife to a battle with cancer.  Donald and Garcia are in particularly good form and each is a 5-1 bet to lead the European squad in the points race. Donald has proven he can go head to head with Woods at a major event after a run for the $1.2 million purse at the PGA Championship. Garcia’s Ryder Cup credentials prove he’s ready for battle too.
